UEFA Proposes New Qualifying System for 2026 World Cup to FIFA

UEFA presents a proposal to FIFA for a new system to qualify for the 2026 World Cup

The European Football Association (UEFA) announced today, Wednesday, that it will propose to FIFA the use of a qualifying system for the 16 European teams, who will compete to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, as it will be a group stage and some knockout matches.

The UEFA Executive Committee stated that the group stage will have the regular league format with home and away matches, provided that the teams will be divided into 12 groups, each one comprising 4 or 5 teams, between March and November 2025.

According to the proposal, the first of each group will qualify directly for the World Cup, while the 12 runners-up will enter the knockout stage, which will be held in March 2026 with the participation of 16 teams.

The 12 second-placed teams will be added to the 4 best teams in the 2024-2025 European Nations League, which are those that were unable to finish the qualifiers in their groups in first or second place.

The stage of the knockout matches will take place in the form of a semi-final of one match, followed by the finals of one match as well.
