Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
UEFA announced the regulation of away goals in European competitions, including Champions League will be deleted. This rule takes effect in the 2021/2022 season.
The away goals regulation has been in use for more than half a century. However, now these rules will no longer be decisive in the knockout stages in the Champions League and Europa League. The same is true for club competitions at other European level, including in women’s and youth football.
Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin explained that the current rules were in conflict with the original goal. These rules are considered to prevent teams from playing attacking football.
The decision was taken by the UEFA Executive Committee on the recommendation of the UEFA Club Competitions Committee and the UEFA Women’s Football Committee.
“The UEFA Executive Committee has today approved a proposal to remove away goals from all UEFA club competitions in the qualifying rounds for the 2021/2022 season,” a UEFA statement read.
The away goals rule was originally applied to determine the winner in a two-legged knockout match. The goal is to distinguish the same number of aggregate goals in two matches.
In that case, the team that has scored the most number of away goals is considered the winner and advances to the next round even though it ends in a draw.
Instead, UEFA will apply a 2×15 minute extra time at the end of the second leg if both teams have scored the same number of goals. Penalties will be the last resort to determine which team will qualify for the next phase.
