UEFA imposes additional sanctions on Russia

Nyon

UEFA impose additional sanctions on Russia. Teams from the Red Bear Country are prohibited from appearing in European competitions next season.

Russia was hit by sanctions as a result of military aggression against Russia Ukraine in February 2022. FIFA temporarily excluded Russia from the international stage, while UEFA disqualified Russian teams from the 2021/2022 Europa League.

The Russian Football Union (FUR) has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the penalties handed down by FIFA and UEFA. CAS rejected the appeal, until the FUR decided to withdraw their appeal on March 30, 2022.

Russia have not stopped their military incursion into Ukraine to date. In the midst of this conflict, UEFA returned Russia’s additional punishment.

In an official statement, UEFA banned Russian men’s and women’s football clubs from appearing in next season’s European championships. The Russian national team also automatically ranks fourth in Group 2 of Liga B UEFA Nations Leaguewhich means they are relegated to League C.

The Russian Women’s National Team was also removed from the 2022 European Cup which will take place in England in July. Russia’s place was replaced by the team they beat in the play-off phase, Portugal.

Russia also has to bury their dream of hosting the 2028/2032 European Cup. UEFA stated that Russia did not meet the requirements set out in Article 19.02 of the UEFA Final Round Submission Rules.

Sanctions against Russia also apply to age-level football and futsal for the male and female categories. The Russian Football Union will most likely appeal back to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over the latest sentence UEFA this time.
