UEFA gave the Czechs a chance. Can the Prague S turn it?

Sparta has moved from third place in the European League group to the new competition and will face Partizan Belgrade. Slavia finished second in the Conference League group and will play with Fenerbahce Istanbul.

The conference league is experiencing its premiere year, which is why the representatives of Czech football at UEFA were informed about how the knockout playoff will be scored.

“Two points will be awarded for a win and a point for a draw in the national coefficient, bonus points for promotion will not be credited. No points are counted in the club coefficients, “reports Štěpán Hanuš, Director of Communications of the League Football Association (LFA).

“Confirmation is important in the fight for a key TOP15 position in the national ranking, where if our clubs succeed, we gain an advantage over Denmark and Turkey (FC Copenhagen or Galatasaray advance directly to the round of 16),” adds Hanuš.

The coefficient is calculated so that the points gained on the field are divided by the number of participants in the country at the beginning of the season, in the Czech case five.

Battle for the key 15th place
14. Switzerland 29,675 1/4
15. Turkey 26,900 2/5
16. Greece 26,700 2/4
17. Croatia 26,650 1/4
18. Denmark 26,575 3/5
19. Czech Republic 26,400 2/5
20. Cyprus 26,375 0/4
21. Norway 25,000 1/4
22. Israel 24,125 1/4
The fraction indicates how many representatives continue / how many have started the season.

The Czech Republic is currently in 19th place in the UEFA national coefficient ranking, which determines the deployment and number of representatives in individual competitions. The key is the 15th position, which last guarantees five representatives in the cups. The Czech teams are missing half a point from the 19th place to the currently fifteenth Turkey. This season, the 2023/24 deployment is up for grabs.

Turkey, sixteenth Greece, seventeenth Croatia and eighteenth Denmark remain ahead of domestic clubs. The order is still extremely balanced, the difference between the 15th and 20th position is only 0.525 points.

The development of the Czech coefficient has been declining in recent years. Therefore, domestic clubs in the year 2022/23 will have only four representatives in the cups after a long time. Only the champion will play the qualification of the Champions League, the remaining three will face the Conference League formed this year.
