UEFA Fines Lithuanian Football Federation for Anti-Putin Chants: LFF to Appeal Decision

UEFA fined the Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) 10 thousand euros for anti-Putin chants.

The Lithuanian federation was hit with a financial fine following fan heckling during a Euro 2024 qualifying game against Serbia in September.

However, one of the leaders of the Lithuanian team Eustace Lasitskas on Instagram urged fans to continue: “Keep repeating, we will pay fines with our bonuses if we have to.”

Similar famous chants against Putin can often be heard at other sporting events in Lithuania. A particularly popular chant “Putin is a dick” originated in Kharkov after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

On Friday, October 20, the LFF announced that it would file an appeal against UEFA’s decision on the fine. The Lithuanian national team lost its chance to qualify for Euro 2024 from a group with Hungary, Serbia, Montenegro and Bulgaria.
