UEFA has decided to change the name of the UEFA Europa Conference League. The European Football Association announces that the word ‘Europe’ will be dropped from the 2024/25 season, leaving ‘UEFA Conference League’. The association says it has come to this decision after research among fans and commercial partners.

Introduced under the ‘Europa’ umbrella at the start of the 2021-24 commercial cycle, the new competition has quickly established itself with a wide audience after two successful seasons. “Research among both fans and commercial partners has shown that removing ‘Europa’ from the name of the competition will allow for further development as a stand-alone competition. This proposed change has been approved by the UEFA Executive Committee. It will come into force in the new cycle, from the 2024/25 season.”

“Together with the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Conference League will continue to deliver ‘Thursday Night Football’ to fans across Europe and beyond. A strong link between the leagues will continue as both brand identities will remain very close and both leagues will be sold together to broadcast partners and sponsors.” The Conference League turned out to be a true gold mine for the Netherlands. Partly thanks to Feyenoord’s place in the final in 2022 and AZ’s semi-final place a year later, the Netherlands has passed Portugal in the coefficient ranking. This means that the numbers one and two of the upcoming Eredivisie season qualify directly for the Champions League, while the number three can enter the preliminary round of the billion dollar ball.

Host cities conference league finals
UEFA has also announced which cities can look forward to hosting the next two Conference League finals. The Agia Sofia Stadium in the Greek capital Athens will be the battleground for the final of the upcoming season, 2023/24. It is the first time that an international final will take place in that stadium, as the stadium, the third largest in Greece, only opened its doors last year. A year later, the final will be held in Wroclaw, Poland. The Stadium Wroclaw, played by Slask Wroclaw, will then be the location where the Conference League trophy will be fought.
