UEFA Competitions Committee decides to end away goals rule :: zerozero.pt

The leaders of the UEFA Club Competitions Committee this Friday gave the green light for the end of the away goals rule in the 2021/22 editions of the Champions League and Europa League, reports the newspaper this evening The Times.

According to the aforementioned newspaper, the competition directors decided to do so at a meeting held in Porto, on the eve of the Champions League final. The decision will be officially communicated to the Executive Committee of the governing body of European football, which will have to ratify it.

The rule in question is used in case there is a tie in the number of goals scored in a tie, benefiting the team that scored the most goals away from home between the two matches.

In the past, the possibility of ending a rule that has existed since 1965 has been discussed within UEFA, but so far this possibility has never been advanced. The current context of the pandemic, and taking into account that the rule has been valid even in qualifiers played on neutral ground, has led to this intention being shared by a greater number of directors with decision-making power at UEFA.
