The European Football Association (UEFA) expelled Juventus from the Conference League on Friday due to false accounting.
The place of the Torino club will be taken by Fiorentina, the eighth place in the Italian league, in the third European Cup series. This year, the Florentines played in the final of the Conference League, which they lost 2-1 against the English West Ham United. They will join in the last round of the qualifiers this season.
According to UEFA, Juventus must also pay a fine of 10 million euros for violating the financial rules, but it can be fined another 10 million if the club does not comply with UEFA’s regulations in the following seasons. The English Chelsea was also fined ten million for financial irregularities between 2012 and 2019.
Juventus were also punished in their own country for similar reasons: the Zebras were hit with a ten-point deduction last season, so they ended up in seventh place in Serie A instead of third, qualifying for the Champions League. According to UEFA’s current decision, however, they will not be able to start there either.
Among the Hungarian teams, champion Ferencváros, silver medalist Kecskemét, bronze medalist Debrecen and cup winner Zalaegerszeg are also interested in the Conference League, the second qualifying round of the series is currently underway.
