With the first teams already playing the first qualifying round of the Champions League 2022/2023the Union of European Football Federations (UEFA) announced how the economic prizes will be distributed. Next, Footnote share the numbers that each team will be receiving this season and when the Orejona group stage begins.
Increased budget for participants
According to a report from Registered Marketing, the regulatory body for European football budgets a total of 3,500 million euros between all tournaments. Of which, almost 2,000 million will be allocated to the most important competition on the continent.
In the first instance, the 32 teams that participate in the group stage will receive a total of 15.64 million. Also, UEFA will give a bonus of 2.8 million per game won, while the reward for a draw will be 930 thousand euros.
For their part, the 16 clubs that qualify for the round of 16 will have an extra income of 9.6 million euros. In the quarters, the participants will obtain a total of 10.6 million and those who are among the best four will receive 12.5 million
In the decisive duel for the title, both finalists will get 15.5 million more. The champion will not only keep the Orejona, but will also keep an additional 4.5 million. Thus, the winner of trophy can get to harvest almost 85 million euros throughout the entire continental contest.
Sale of rights
Looking ahead to this new season, UEFA plans to go out on the market to sell the audiovisual rights of the competitions in USA. As shared by Bloomberg, from the organization, they hope to get a figure of 2,000 million dollars for 6 seasons, an equivalent to 330 million dollars per year.
In case of being able to close this agreement, it would be only from the 24/25 season that the European entity would receive more than double what it collects with Paramount y Univision, who own the rights today. These companies have a contract 145 million per season. And, although the figure they expect from Europe is much higher, they will surely try to make a counter offer.
The regulatory body has already met with different platforms and companies to listen to the proposals: NBC, ESPN, Amazon, Apple, Fox y Warner, among others. The time to present the proposals is until next August 15.
Champions League dates
The teams that entered the first phases of the Champions League are already underway. And, at this moment, the second qualifying stage is being played. On August 25, the draw will be held where it will be known how the groups will be composed.
From there, the first games will be played on September 6 and 7, matchday 2 will be played between the 13 and 14 of the same month. In October the matches corresponding to dates 3 (10/4 and 10/5), 4 (10/11 and 12/10) and 5 (10/25 and 10/26) will be played. The duels that close the group stage are scheduled to be played on November 1 and 2.
That same week, on November 7, the matches for the round of 16 will be drawn. However, the first leg games will resume between February 14, 15, 21 and 22, 2023, while the return games will take place on March 7, 8, 14 and 15.
On March 17, the clashes of the quarterfinals and semifinals will be announced. In this way, the matches will be played on April 11 and 12 (the first match) and on April 18 and 19 (the rematches). In turn, the semifinals are scheduled for May 9 and 10 and for the return matches they would be on the 16 and 17 of the same month.
The grand final will be played on June 10 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Estambul. This is the same stadium where, in 2005, the Liverpool came back from 0-3 to Milan in what is now known as “Miracle of Istanbul”. Finally, the final of the 2020 edition was going to be played on this court, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was moved to Lisboa.
