At the UEFA Executive Committee meeting last week, the UEFA administration was tasked with reviewing the possibility of allowing Russian U17 national teams to participate in UEFA competitions.
The matter would then be dealt with at today’s meeting with the executive committee, however, the overall assessment of the UEFA administration shows that Russian participation in current competitions is not possible. The case has therefore been withdrawn, and was not on today’s agenda.
Fredrik Reinfeldt, chairman of the Swedish Football Association:
– Our opinion is that it is wrong to allow Russian national teams to participate in international tournaments as long as the war in Ukraine continues. It is therefore positive and welcome that UEFA now chooses not to open up its competitions to Russian national teams, neither for seniors nor for youth.
Karl-Erik Nilsson, UEFA’s first vice-president:
– I was prepared and fully prepared to highlight the Swedish stance if the issue had been addressed at the meeting. Now the case was withdrawn without discussion, which means that the line that SvFF and Swedish sports stand for is also what will apply going forward – which I welcome.
