UDPS Confirms Félix Tshisekedi as Candidate for 2023 Presidential Election

The Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) unsurprisingly confirmed this Saturday, during an extraordinary congress in Kinshasa, the candidacy of Félix Tshisekedi for the presidential election of 2023. For several years, the current President of the Republic clearly shows his intention to run for a second term.

Faced with militants and party officials, there was no suspense. The choice of Félix Tshisekedi as a candidate had already been determined earlier this year. Augustin Kabuya, general secretary of the UDPS, confirmed the decision taken by the party.

« We have come to ratify the resolutions of the city of Kisantu, which had nominated Felix Tshisekedi as a candidate for the presidency of the Republic. That’s why there are no ballot boxes here for internal voting or competition. »

The congress also reinforced the dominant position of Felix Tshisekedi within the party. “ The mandate of Mr. Félix Antoine Tshisekedi as president of the UDPS Tshisekedi is renewed for five years. Article two specifies that Mr. Félix Antoine Tshisekedi, as president of the UDPS, is now recognized as a high moral authority. “, specified Clément Baruti, is the rapporteur of the commission in charge of organizing the congress

It now remains to seduce voters in a country where several regions are marked by violence. In December, Félix Tshisekedi will be opposed to several candidates, such as Moïse Katumbi and Martin Fayulu.

Betting on the legislative elections to strengthen itself in Parliament

He therefore wants to put all the chances on his side. On the institutional level, he can already count on the support of several political leaders: the presidents of the two chambers of Parliament, the Prime Minister. Without forgetting Jean-Pierre Bemba and Vital Kamerhe.

The latter two have put aside, for the moment, their presidential ambitions to join the government as deputy prime ministers. Both, as well as the majority of ministers, are part of the Sacred Union for the Nation, the electoral platform led by the current president.

However, Felix Tshisekedi does not rely solely on these alliances. The UDPS, his party, has regained serenity after the internal struggles for power in which some of its executives were engaged.

A few months before the elections, ambitions remain strong, the party is in battle order. For the national legislative elections alone, the UDPS presents 495 candidates for 500 available seats. And for the provincial legislative elections, the party proposes candidates in all the constituencies. With deposit fees paid by the UDPS.

The objective: to provide Felix Tshisekedi, if he is reappointed as head of the DRC, with a comfortable parliamentary majority.
