Mexico City. Established as the first private university to teach academic arts plans in Mexico, the University of the Americas Puebla (UDLAP), celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Arts Department, with an artistic exhibition that brought together the talent of the university community and graduates of disciplines such as theater, dance, music and plastic arts, to prove the great work that has always been done.
Starting with a performance that strongly reflects the quality of the institution and the 30 years of training artists; Music, Dance and Theater students, together with Dr. Perla del Rocío Fernández López, dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, began these commemorative activities. In said space, Dr. Luis Ernesto Derbez Bautista, rector of UDLAP, congratulated the department on the anniversary, as well as for the great work they have done for so many years reflected in the quality of their presentations; “Without art and without culture there is no soul in a country and that is what you have done for 30 years, being the soul of the institution,” he expressed.
For her part, Dr. Misa Ito recognized that UDLAP, in addition to being the first private university to open arts degrees in Mexico, “was the first to combine the four arts in the way we have continued to do.” Likewise, he recognized that this would not be possible without the impetus and work that he began with Dr. Basilio Rojo Ruíz, who was a prominent academic at this educational institution.
Throughout this commemorative program, the students of the Department of Arts courses gave proof of their talent, effort, courage and commitment to being a fundamental pillar for the university community at a local, national and international level. “Being an arts student in Mexico implies an experience that goes beyond solely academic training, as it is a social commitment in which each of us are formed as active agents of change,” declared María del Rayo Sosa Guerrero, student of the Bachelor’s Degree in Art History and Curatorship.
The artistic exhibition
With a dozen activities, UDLAP celebrated the history of its community making art. Starting with a tour of the 30 years of the UDLAP Theater Company, showing scenes from the productions that have been carried out during these years. Subsequently, the talk “Writing as a subject in the visual arts” was given by Dr. Mónica Espinosa.
Later, the presentation of the choreography “Hidden Canyons among the Flowers” took place, created by Mtro. Raúl Tamez. Music graduate Lulú Bulos also offered a concert, after which the first exhibition of the Fall 2024 season of La Luz de la Nevera was inaugurated, by Alan Eduardo Castañeda and curated by María Fernanda Tarango and Ana Karol González.
The closing of this artistic day was marked by a concert by the Cultural Representative Teams; Finally, the play “Los de la 28” was presented, written and directed by students of the Bachelor of Theater.
