A great lover of cars, especially Ferrari, Albert Uderzo quickly shared his passion for beautiful mechanics and competition in his creations. Thus, from Astérix’s second album, La Serpe d’Or, published in 1962, Asterix and Obélix pass through the city of Suindinium, the day of the great oxcart race, entitled the 24 hours of Suindinium, including the start is given on the cob. A nod to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Co-creator of Asterix with René Goscinny, Albert Uderzo, owner of some remarkable Ferrari (a 512 M), belonged to the Ferrari club and drove on numerous circuits, frequenting the middle of the race. With his faithful teammate Goscinny, he works as a relay: one for the script, the other for drawing. An international comic book success, Asterix was the hero of 38 albums, between 1959 and 2019, sold 380 million copies.
Albert Uderzo died at the age of 92, victim of a heart attack. To his family and loved ones, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest offers its deepest condolences.
