UCI will test more often in Giro d’Italia: ‘Today everyone is negative’

According to van Empel, it is good that the organization is increasing the number of tests. “It is good to be able to isolate the positive cases immediately.”

Three riders positive

After the previous rest day, last Monday, Steven Kruijswijk and Michael Matthews turned out to be positive. Previously, Simon Yates was sent home for a positive test. This also ensured that the teams of Kruijswijk and Yates, Jumbo-Visma and Mitchelton-Scott, have gone home.

In addition to the three riders, four Mitchelton-Scott staff members, one from AG2R and one from Team Ineos were also infected. Due to the increasing number of infections, cycling team EF made the suggestion to end the Giro prematurely. Whereupon UCI president David Lappartient told Eurosport that “it is a challenge to end the cycling season in a good way, but we can only do this if we pull together and work together”.
