UCCS Shooting: A Tragic Incident Raises Concerns for Campus Safety
It has been one week since the devastating shooting that took the lives of two individuals at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) campus. As the suspect, Nicholas Jordan, appeared in court for the first time on Friday, students and faculty members couldn’t help but express their deep concerns about campus safety.
The incident unfolded when Jordan allegedly killed Samuel Knopp and Celie Montgomery inside a dorm room. Arrest papers reveal that the motive behind this horrific act stemmed from an argument over trash, during which Jordan threatened to kill Knopp. This shocking revelation has left students in disbelief and questioning the level of security on campus.
“Sam was a beloved person, and we want his life to be remembered by taking action to ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future,” expressed Laura Stephens, a classmate of Knopp’s. The impact of his death has been particularly felt within the visual and performing arts department, where he was an active member. Attendance in music classes has drastically dropped, as students struggle to cope with the loss.
The arrest papers shed light on the events of that fateful day. Police were alerted by one of Knopp’s roommates who heard gunshots and subsequently saw someone fleeing the scene. It was later revealed that Knopp and his roommate had filed several complaints against Jordan, citing issues related to marijuana use and cleanliness. This raises concerns about whether enough action was taken to address these complaints before tragedy struck.
Adding to the unease among students, it was discovered that three days after the shooting, Jordan was found in possession of multiple firearms, including an AK-47 hidden in the back of his car. “I don’t think it was safe to say that there was no ongoing threat. We all felt very unsafe,” Stephens expressed her concerns. Jorden Gershon, another UCCS student, echoed these sentiments, stating, “I felt incredibly unsafe during those three days.”
In response to these concerns, 11News reached out to the police for clarification. They assured the community that if there was any further threat, they would have made it known. However, this statement did little to ease the fears of the UCCS student body.
Unfortunately, UCCS declined an interview with 11News, but they did mention that they are continually working on enhancing campus security. While the university is unable to provide additional information about the people involved in this tragic incident, it is evident that they are committed to ensuring the safety of their students and staff members.
As the UCCS community mourns the loss of Samuel Knopp and Celie Montgomery, the focus now shifts towards implementing measures that will prevent such tragedies in the future.
