UCAM and Entomo AgroIndustrial promote the use of insects as bioconverters of organic waste

MURCIA, 9 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM) and Entomo AgroIndustrial have launched the University-Company Research Chair of ‘Industrial Production of Insects and Circular Economy in Bio-waste Management’, sources from the educational institution reported in a statement.

Its objective is to promote business innovation, generate and disseminate scientific knowledge and create training programs in the field of industrial production of insects with which to transform biodegradable organic waste into compounds that are of interest to sectors such as agriculture, livestock and industry. pharmaceutical.

For this, the larvae of the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) will be used, which stands out for its ability to devour any type of bio-waste and transform it into raw material with high added value. During its growth, the larva transforms the bio-waste into compost, useful in fertilizing the field.

Later the larva is ground to obtain flour rich in protein, protein hydrolysates, fats, lauric acid or chitin, to generate chitosan and organic fertilizer. The entire process is carried out at the Entomo AgroIndustrial facilities.

In addition, through this Chair, research will be carried out in the field of animal and human nutrition to obtain new products from insects. “We have created a new value chain from bio-waste and a pioneering industrial sector: scalable, profitable and offshoring.

To this end, in November 2019 Entomo AgroIndustrial already inaugurated the first European Research Center for the development of its technology, in collaboration with the City Council of Cehegín, whose Department of Economic Promotion, Industry and Employment has put the measured measures at the service of the Chair. municipalities aimed at facilitating projects for entrepreneurs, such as the Business Incubator “, says Diego Amores, CEO of the company and director of the Chair.

It is coordinated by José María Cayuela, vice dean of the degrees in Gastronomy, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and Food Science and Technology at UCAM, who assures that “the development of these biorefineries will allow the transformation of organic bio-waste, contributing to its reduction , and therefore will allow us to adjust to the new limitations of the EU for the protection of the environment “.
