UbuntuDDE: A Secure and Beautiful Linux OS with a Deepin Desktop

Five years ago, the author said, deepinonce called it one of the most beautiful Linux desktop operating systems on the market. At the time, the only problem I found with deepin was that the software center tended to prompt the installation of less-trusted software.

However, this lack of trust left many users hesitant, and deepin was dropped from many “recommended Linux lists.” That distrust led to the birth of another flavor of Ubuntu called UbuntuDDE. UbuntuDDE, like deepin, is beautiful and user-friendly, and free of malicious software.

UbuntuDDE is a combination of Ubuntu (currently 23.04) and the deepin desktop. The distro also has its own software store called the “DDE store” using the official Ubuntu repositories.

In other words, UbuntuDDE is a very secure Linux that everyone can use with confidence even though deepin is used.

When you first touch UbuntuDDE, it might feel like a cross between GNOME and KDE. The desktop looks like a blend of GNOME elements (such as the application screen) with a KDE aesthetic. It’s not really, but the combination makes for a nice-looking and easy-to-use desktop.

The panel at the bottom of the screen is divided into two, and the launchers are lined up on the left side (“Launcher”, “Show Desktop”, “Multitasking View”, “File Manager”, “Photo Album”, “Music player”, “Calendar “Control Center” “Software Updater” “Trash”). The second panel is the system tray, with icons for keyboard selection, network options, clock, power control, and more.

Clicking Launcher brings up a screen similar to GNOME’s Applications screen with a search bar.

If you don’t like this view, you can click the icon at the top right of the screen to switch to the old-school menu view, where items are sorted alphabetically or by category.

UbuntuDDE also allows you to change the menu display to the traditional method.
