With the release of Ubuntu 23.04, there is a small change that unifies the behavior of Ubuntu and its variants with other desktops. So far, although Ubuntu itself also offers Snap in addition to Deb packages, other variants can support Flatpak at will. Canonical now reports that it has agreed with the developers of variants with other desktops on a common procedure that means only one thing: from the default configurations and installations of the system Flatpak support will disappear.
Nothing changes for existing users with Flatpaks, updating to a future version will not remove anything for them. For others, this means that they either find the application in the repositories or Snap, or they have to configure Flatpak manually. Canonical is concerned with unifying the user experience from all official Ubuntu variants, Snap is said to be the best choice in terms of functionality and security.
