Mipening about customer-friendliness instead raises an eyebrow for me, you could expect this.
Just to be clear, I was just trying to clarify what the discussion was about.
But yes, as the article was originally written (taking servers for 90 games offline, without announcement; the article has since been supplemented / corrected), I think that is indeed not done. While you could have expected it to happen someday, you couldn’t expect it to happen now.
They could announce at least a few months in advance that they are going to do this. Then old fans can play it one more time out of nostalgia and then you’re not screwed if you just bought the game (used) and they pull the plug the next day.
Apart from that, I think it’s ridiculous that unlocked and/or purchased extras are suddenly no longer available. Then release a patch that automatically unlocks all bonus content for everyone (who is crazy enough to still be playing a game years later). With publishers who go bankrupt, I understand that that is not an option (because yes, bankrupt, so who is going to pay for that), but Ubisoft could absolutely do this, they just don’t feel like it.
These kind of pranks where you stab your paying customers in the back are (and, it seems, remain…) an advantage of just-not-quite-legal ways to get games; After all, once all protections have been removed, you don’t need the Ubisoft servers anyway, so it doesn’t matter if they go down.
