I say it often, but Ubisoft isn’t that bad at all. Yes, it’s a lot of rinse & repeat (and yes, I thought Breakpoint was really bad, especially after the awesome Wildlands). Besides the fact that Ubisoft has been revolutionary in co-op gaming mechanics for the last 6 years (The Division & Ghost Recon are good examples) and that they really do innovate, their games for the casual gamer are just plain fun. The fact that it is always a new part in an open world setting (far cry, assassins creed, ghost recon) is not a deal breaker for everyone. I’m just a simple gamer who generally doesn’t care much about story games and can have a great time with installment 5 in the same style.
What I find completely striking (and usually you get big minuses for comments like this, but still) is that people constantly complain about the open world concepts of Ubisoft, but then other open world games such as The Witcher 3, Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Zero Dawn – which largely share the same gameplay mechanics and recipe – totally praise it. And yes, those are three examples of games where the story is clearly better than an average Ubisoft game, but where other aspects of the game (such as wooden controls) are clearly less.
All in all, not every game is for everyone and just because you don’t get anything released that interests you certainly doesn’t mean Ubisoft is a bad developer. But to be fair, Ubisoft certainly does not belong to the list of “best developers”.
