Ubisoft: Prince of Persia remake development passes important milestone

I don’t understand it, because franchises that do well become worth an enormous amount of money. It’s a bit like the existing franchises are hanging on Life Support with all those remakes that are hit/miss, and little new is added. That’s infinitely stupid in a market that continues to grow, isn’t it? Especially when you consider that every time a big-world game is offered (that promise of a new universe, something to explore) people line up. Bethesda’s trick, for example, with Starfield. The promise of that new world alone sold that game, because let’s be honest, it’s not much more than Fallout with some Space scenes in between and a lot of loading screens.

The Witcher 3 also sold that vision. Baldur’s Gate 3 ditto. Skyrim. Destiny. Warframe. Cyberpunk. Etc.

Why isn’t it there? Because shareholders are not ambitious in a world dominated by a few large publishers with deep pockets and a number of entrenched franchises that still bring in money. Everyone gets their annual present, we dominate, that’s fine. ActiBlizz was recently acquired by MS. Blizzard’s company, which once housed the soul and soul in gaming. Say it. People would rather be busy building storefronts and cloud services around you no more games to sell but a subscription so that you have even less control over the code; mods and cheats have been successfully killed, so that they can sell you a 5% XP boost and continue to drip-feed the content. And of course you can apply all the other tricks a store has to something that should actually be entertainment. Because yes, according to the letter of the law, ‘isn’t that how it should be?’… Why would you come up with something new if you can make it so easy? Every now and then, thanks to your horrible profit margins, you land some new publishers and studios and you’re done. Why do you think Valve never counted to 3? They have Steam. And now Deck. History repeats – no new content, but new ways to play and pay for that content.

You will find the new ‘franchises’ if you look at the indies, although part two may still be in development there
