I also see a cultural drive towards mediocrity. Protruding above the ground is not appreciated, not even by the local HR. You cannot promote people who perform exceptionally well because you quickly get skewed eyes from people who work there longer or who are in a higher ‘caste’. Unfortunately, those kinds of things are still very deep there.

HR in general is very sensitive to that sort of thing and they just flatly refuse to let people get promoted before it’s ‘their time’. People get mad when they fall under someone of a lower caste. Despite the fact that that person is extremely good and also very pleasant. We’ve had this on hand ourselves and you just can’t get it through.

Result: people with a lot of talent and ambition leave because they are not appreciated. And rightly so from their point of view, but it’s bad for your business. The mediocrity remains. You can sometimes keep the people who are really good by bringing them to Europe or the US, where there is an ambitious mentality. But that is very difficult and not everyone wants that.

PS it sounds a bit harsh but it’s frustrating. A bit like the Dutch office culture in the 80s where men were surprised by a woman as boss, or someone younger than themselves. The world doesn’t work that way anymore.
