Recent statements by the CEO and director of Ubisoft have only added fuel to the fire, causing a wave of frustration among the gaming community.

Stevy Chassard, Ubisoft’s director of monetization, called some players “obscene” for spreading hatred against the company in a controversial post on LinkedIn. Chassard argued that given the problems facing the games industry, gamers should support companies rather than want them to fail. “Watching gamers react on social media, wishing companies and people bad luck, is sad,” Chassard said.
However, this statement received an immediate response from the gaming community. Many of them argue that Ubisoft does not listen to its fandom, as can be seen from recent premieres, which are not very successful. The Assassin’s Creed Shadows controversy and the poor sales of Star Wars Outlaws are cited as examples of the gap between player expectations and what the company is offering.
On the one hand, we have a company that feels misunderstood and attacked, on the other – fans that feel they are not feeling and disappointed. Chassard argues that the negative comments affect the morale of the thousands of Ubisoft employees who are “doing everything they can to make good games.”
However, players are firing back, wondering why they would support a company that doesn’t seem to care about their opinions and expectations. They criticize Ubisoft for “destroying the Assassin’s Creed franchise” and disrespecting the cultural heritage of games.
What should the relationship between game developers and players look like in an era when social media allows instant and often merciless criticism? Isn’t criticism, even harsh criticism, a natural part of the creative process?
Regardless of the response, one thing is certain – Ubisoft has a big challenge in rebuilding the trust of its fan base. Without communication and mutual understanding, the gap between the company and the players can only deepen.
