Ubisoft defends Skull and Bones’ $70 price tag

“It’s a AAAA game that will deliver in the long run.”

Skull and Bones has been under development for many years and has thus cost Ubisoft an unknown but guaranteed very large amount of money. Therefore, they are probably quite eager for the game to start pulling in money for them instead, which should be achieved not only with a live service setup and battle pass, but also a price tag of $70 for the base game.

The price tag itself was something that was questioned during a question and answer session in connection with Ubisoft’s latest quarterly report, where the questioner wondered why they set the price so high, since it could scare people away and lead to a significantly smaller player base.

Yves Guillemot replied:

You will see that Skull and Bones is a full-fledged game. It’s a very big game and we feel people will really see how comprehensive and complete the game is. It is truly a full AAAA game that will deliver in the long run.

Will the game manage to recoup its development cost and even turn a profit? It remains to be seen, because many are skeptical of the game as a whole as well as the setup where in most of the game you don’t get to control a character, but instead “are” your entire ship. If you want to test it yourself, an open beta test is running right now. More info about it and how to participate here.
