Ubiquiti Next-Gen Gateway Lite: Specs, Price, and Release Date

Ubiquiti comes with a UniFi Next-Gen Gateway Lite router. This is a successor to the UniFi Security Gateway. The new router supports a throughput of up to 1Gbit/s. The product will be released on November 20 for 144 euros.

Of Ubiquiti Next-Gen Gateway Lite, also called the UXG Lite, has a single WAN port of 1Gbit/s and a single LAN port of 1Gbit/s. The gateway therefore supports throughputs of maximum 1Gbit/s, even if the IDS or IPS threat detection function is enabled. Ubiquiti says this makes the new router ‘up to ten times faster’ than the previous UniFi Security Gateway when using IDS and IPS.

The UXG Lite has a dual-core processor with two Arm Cortex-A53 cores at 1GHz and has 1GB of DDR3L memory. Ubiquiti says the gateway has a relatively compact housing of 98x98x30mm. The previous USG router was longer and wider, but also had a second LAN port.

The new gateway does not have a built-in UniFi controller. The device must therefore be controlled via UniFi Network. Users can purchase a separate Cloud Key, take out an Official UniFi Hosting subscription or the UniFi Network application run for free on a PC, server or Docker container.

The UXG Lite also doesn’t have built-in WiFi support. The gateway therefore requires a separate access point for WiFi. According to previous reports, Ubiquiti will arrive in due course also with a UniFi Express, which features a built-in Wi-Fi 6 access point and a UniFi Network controller. It is not known when that will happen; Ubiquiti has not yet announced when exactly the Express will be released or what it will cost.

The UXG Lite is powered via USB-C and uses a maximum of 3.83W according to the manufacturer. The gateway supports Bluetooth 5.1, which allows the device to be set up via a smartphone. The Next-Gen Gateway Lite will be sold on Ubiquiti’s website from November 20. The device then costs 144 euros including VAT.
