As a result, several Uber customers pointed out on Twitter that the demand for rides caused prices to increase almost 10 times more than the typical rate.
In response to the complaints, an Uber spokesperson told the US media Newsweek that the company worked to quickly disable price increases in the area.
“Our hearts go out to the victims of this morning’s horrific shooting in Sunset Park. Following the incident, Uber disabled price gouging in the surrounding area and capped prices citywide. As always, Uber strives to be a resource for New Yorkers looking to get around town. If anyone on our platform experienced unwanted charges during this emergency, we’ll work to get them reimbursed,” Uber spokeswoman Freddi Goldstein said Tuesday.
The prices of the platform, and of other apps such as Lyft, automatically increase when there is greater demand for trips. This can happen due to bad weather, special events or rush hour, according to the company’s website.
