Uber drivers can no longer use phones in Brussels
Uber drivers who use the phones to perform services or use the geolocator can be fined and have their car impounded, according to a recent decision by the Brussels government that effectively leaves the transport company unable to operate in the capital.
Brussels is estimated to have 2,000 Uber drivers, but people are very divided when it comes to whether Uber, which has gained illegal entry into other countries, has a place in the Belgian capital.
“It is the system itself that is reprehensible. The question is, what future do we want to give to passenger transport in Brussels? The unfair competition presented by Uber is not sustainable in the long term, ”said Brussels Minister and President Rudi Vervoort, according to the Belgian news agency.
He called for consideration of alternatives, noting that Uber does not hire its drivers, who instead work as bogus freelancers.
An Uber representative in Belgium said that because the regulations are still being investigated by the Constitutional Court, it is “incomprehensible” that action is being taken against 2,000 drivers.
In the Taxi Plan drawn up by the Brussels government in 2018, platforms like Uber are subject to the same rules as taxis.
