The court in Amsterdam ruled in favor of the plaintiff – the trade union FNV. He argued that Uber drivers are essentially taxis employees and should therefore be entitled to the same pay and employee benefits as other drivers in the sector.

The Amsterdam court concluded that drivers transporting passengers using the Uber application are subject to a collective agreement for taxi services.

“The legal relationship between Uber and these drivers meets all the characteristics of an employment contract,” the decision said.

In Amsterdam, around 4,000 drivers earn money through the Uber application. According to a spokesman for Uber, the verdict does not mean any change for the driver or the company yet, because the company is appealing.
