“In the rain, snow or heat, they never stop delivering us (food), and now we can compensate them,” said the Democratic mayor of the city of 8.5 million inhabitants, Eric Adams.
This “decent salary” is “considerable progress that will bring enormous changes” for these workers, congratulated Gustavo Ajche, leader of the “Los Deliveristas Unidos” movement, so called due to a distortion of the word “delivery”, the term in English. to name the activity of the delivery people.
For its part, the DoorDash platform, through a spokesperson, called the New York State Supreme Court’s decision an “extremely disappointing result,” considering that “such an extreme remuneration rate will reduce opportunities and increase costs for everyone.” New Yorkers.”
Uber, Doordash and Grubhub can appeal the decision, which rejects their appeal to suspend the city’s action.
New York announced in June a minimum hourly wage of $17.96, which will be raised to $19.96 in 2025 and then adjusted for inflation, for some 60,000 bicycle delivery workers who work for these applications.
These workers do not have the status of employees nor the rights inherent to this quality.
The platforms resorted to justice and delayed the entry into force of the measure, initially scheduled for July 12.
According to a New York City study from November 2022, up to that point delivery drivers earned $14.18 per hour including customer tips, and only $7.09 without considering tips. $3.06 in expenses had to be subtracted from that total.
