Taxi platform Uber did not adjust the costs charged for waiting for disabled passengers. This led to charges against Uber, because it significantly increases the bill for people with disabilities. The company has now reached a million-dollar settlement and says it will not let this happen again.
The taxi platform, which is also active in the Netherlands, starts charging waiting times two minutes after arrival. The counter only stops when the car leaves for the destination. Uber did not adapt this arrangement to disabled passengers.
The bill for such a ride could quickly add up for someone with a disability. For example, it takes a while to fold a wheelchair or walker and store it in the taxi. A visually impaired person can also take a little longer to get to the taxi safely.
As a result of these discriminatory costs, Uber will reimburse at least 65,000 victims twice the costs incurred. This amount can amount to several million dollars. Furthermore, the taxi platform has to pay approximately 1.8 million dollars (almost 1.8 million euros) to victims who have filed a complaint.
In addition to the monetary amount, Uber also promises to waive all waiting time costs for people with disabilities for the next two years.
