In New York, Uber and Lyft must switch to electric cars by 2030. But that’s what the two ride providers wanted anyway.

Yet until 2035 new combustion engines may be sold in the EU, from then on it’s over. New cars should then roll to the customer purely electrically. Of course, this also applies to the transport service providers who operate in Europe. In New York City, Uber and Lyft drivers are having to part with their combustion engines even sooner.

The metropolitan mayor, Eric Adams, has announced that by 2030 all vehicles from the two providers must be emission-free. That reports The Verge. The change could potentially affect around 100,000 cars currently being rented out in New York.

The city’s fleet will also be purely electric in the future, Adams emphasized. In addition, an infrastructure is to be set up so that electric cars can be charged throughout the city. Uber and Lyft welcome New York Mayor’s move.

“We are pleased to partner with the City of New York,” Paul Augustine, Lyft’s director of sustainability, said in a statement. “New York’s commitment will accelerate a just citywide EV transition, and we look forward to working with the TLC on an ambitious plan for a clean mile rideshare standard. Lyft also announced at the end of 2022 that it would expand its fleet by 2030 electric cars to switch

Similarly, Josh Gold, senior director of policy at Uber, said: “We applaud the mayor’s ambition to reduce emissions, an important goal that we share. Uber has made real strides to become the first zero-emission mobility platform in North America, and there’s still a lot more to do.” The platform aims to be completely carbon-neutral by 2040. As early as 2030, all journeys in the USA, Canada and Europe, in which some strange things are forgotten, can only be completed with electric cars. These are the goals Uber has set itself in 2020.

Both transport service providers also create incentives for their drivers to switch to Stromer. So For example, Uber cooperates with Hertz. Lyft, in turn, pays its drivers in California a $150 weekly bonus. The US state also passed a regulation in 2021 that required ridesharing companies to convert their fleets to electric drives by 2030. There are also discounts when loading and up to seven percent cashback if you use the Lyft Direct debit card.
