UBA’s First International Film Festival: “Cinema and Democracy”

From July 25 to 30, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) will hold the First International Film Festival which, in its first edition, will be dedicated to the theme “Cinema and Democracy”, in keeping with the four decades of democratic recovery in Argentina this year. Among the special guests at FIC.UBA will be the Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia, who will offer an open class for students and will present screenings of some of his well-known films, within the framework of a tribute to his prolific career. The award-winning Ukrainian documentary filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa will also set foot on Argentine soil, who will present four feature films of his renowned work, including the premiere in Argentina of The Natural History of Destruction (2022).

During the festival, more than fifty films will be screened, between the international feature film competition, the Ibero-American short film competition, the UBA short film competition and various retrospectives and tributes. The functions will be, in all cases, with free admission and will have as its main venue the FADU (Pavilion 3 of University City), Besides of Cine Cosmos UBA, Rooms 1 and 2 of the San Martín Cultural Center and the Gaumont del Incaa Cinema.

Among the highlights of the festival, the legendary director and founder of the Universidad del Cine, Manuel Antín, will be honored for his career and its fundamental contribution to ending censorship in Argentine cinema. FIC.UBA will also pay tribute to the civil and cultural association Women and Cinemaone of the essential areas for cinema and the fight for gender parity in the country, which this year celebrates 35 years of transcendent work.

In addition, “40 x 10 x 40” will be presented, a space that will invite forty personalities from national culture, education and politics to choose the ten most representative Argentine films of the last forty years of democracy. Within the framework of FIC.UBA, the seminar “Cinema and Democracy” will also be held, with the aim of generating a space for debate and reflection on the role of the seventh art in the consolidation of democratic values ​​in society. The exhibitions, in charge of important Argentine and international experts, will allow to deepen in specific subjects of the cinema and the democracy.

The registration of films to FIC.UBA is open and free and there is time until May 15, to present national and international fiction, documentary and animation feature films, completed between 2021 and 2023. To register for the competitions, you can perform by entering: https://fic.uba.ar.

The FIC.UBA is organized by the Department of Design Policies and Technological Innovation and the Department of Institutional Relations, Culture and Communication of the UBA, together with the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism (FADU) and the Image Design Career and Sound.
