Despite all the limitations that have arisen due to budget cuts and other unexpected factors, the project of the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí to produce a vaccine against covid-19 continues to advance and has good results to the extent that, at the date, is in primate testing stage; This was reported by the rector of said educational house, Alejandro Zermeño Guerra.
“The project continues and is going very well. A phase of tests in primates is already ending. Tests on primates are not allowed in the country, so we went to a country in Asia and this process is about to conclude and then begin testing on humans. The project is going very well,” stated Zermeño Guerra.
He explained that, although some pharmaceutical companies had their vaccines in a matter of months after the virus was identified, in the case of the UASLP they had to face various economic complications that delayed the development of the biological. He said that, as an example of this issue, while the large laboratories invested up to 200 million dollars, the University has spent just 12 million pesos to get a quality product that meets all the quality standards demanded by international organizations.
He reiterated that, given the progress that has been made so far and the way in which the vaccine has evolved, as well as the results that have been obtained in the different stages, there is confidence that, shortly, tests can begin in to determine if its application is viable as a measure to deal with the pandemic that, to date, continues to be a matter of high concern for public health throughout the world.
We will keep reporting.
