Teh United Arab Emirates (UAE) has achieved a remarkable feat in the 2023 Trends in International mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), securing the top spot in the Arab world. This prestigious study, conducted every four years, assesses the progress of fourth and eighth-grade students in mathematics and science across over 64 countries.
The UAE’s remarkable performance was celebrated at a forum hosted by the Ministry of Education at the futuristic Museum of the Future in Dubai. The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) unveiled the global results via a live broadcast, attended by educational leaders from the UAE, including representatives from the ministry of Education, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai, the Department of Education and Knowledge in Abu Dhabi, and the Sharjah Private Education Authority.
“We congratulate the UAE students on their outstanding achievements in the TIMSS study,” said Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education. “These results are a testament to the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to enhancing the country’s performance in international and standardized studies.”
Al Amiri emphasized the significance of TIMSS as a global benchmark for monitoring educational progress and identifying key strategies for advancement. She highlighted the UAE’s remarkable progress, exceeding the global average in both public and private schools, with 750 schools participating in the study. Notably, the UAE is one of only three countries that demonstrated notable improvement in science scores among all participating nations.
“This tangible development in the quality of education and student achievement aligns with the Ministry’s vision of achieving global educational leadership,” Al Amiri stated.
She further explained that the Ministry, in collaboration with relevant teams, has focused on enhancing students’ skills in mathematics and science to bolster their global competitiveness. This aligns with the UAE’s broader education sector goals, with continuous improvement in international education indicators remaining a top priority.
The UAE’s performance in the 2023 TIMSS study marked a significant leap compared to the 2019 results. Fourth-grade students showed a 17-point increase in mathematics and a 22-point increase in science. Eighth-grade students also demonstrated notable improvement, with a 15-point increase in mathematics and a 14-point increase in science.
The two-day forum, held on December 4th and 5th, provided a platform for discussing the Gulf countries’ TIMSS results and the initiatives undertaken to elevate student performance in mathematics and science. The forum also featured the announcement of results from the rest of the world.
The United Arab Emirates has announced a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionize its education system. Starting in the 2023-2024 academic year, the Ministry of Education will implement a new curriculum designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the 21st century.
