The UAE government launched the “UAE Strategy for Climate Neutrality 2050” as a pioneering step in the UAE’s journey in the field of climate action and a major driver of sustainable economic and social progress in the country.
This came during a session held by Her Excellency Maryam bint Mohammed Al Muhairi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, yesterday, as part of the agenda of the second and final day of the annual meetings of the UAE government.
Her Excellency said: “The UAE Strategy for Climate Neutrality represents an action plan to achieve the goals of the UAE Strategic Initiative to achieve climate neutrality that the country launched two years ago, so that teams begin working seriously to achieve this ambitious goal. The first result of this work was the announcement of the UAE’s path to climate neutrality 2050 last year.” At the COP27 Conference of the Parties in Sharm El-Sheikh.
Her Excellency added: “The strategy represents one of the bright spots in the UAE’s journey in climate action that extends for decades, a journey that was started by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God have mercy on him.”

Her Excellency stressed that without the UAE’s Climate Neutrality 2050 strategy, the country’s emissions would have reached 210 million tons annually.
However, this strategy would lead us to sustainable economic growth while at the same time fulfilling the UAE’s climate obligations and enhancing its contributions to confronting climate change and limiting global warming in accordance with the Paris Climate Agreement. Her Excellency indicated that the strategy also comes within the framework of implementing our nationally determined contributions, through which the UAE pledges to reduce emissions by 40% compared to the business-as-usual scenario by 2030, noting that according to the path of the strategy, the country plans to reduce emissions by 60% by the year 2040, reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

Her Excellency said that the various sectoral initiatives support the UAE government’s commitments to climate neutrality, especially in the six sectors related to energy, industry, transportation, agriculture, waste, and construction, through more than 25 major programs that will be implemented in the near term. Her Excellency identified 3 factors that contribute to enabling supportive efforts to achieve the goals of the state’s vision of climate neutrality, which are providing appropriate mechanisms to finance climate efforts, harnessing technology and supporting the research and development strategy, and adhering to the methodology of enhancing skills and capabilities, through integrating the efforts of federal agencies, local agencies, and the private sector. In addition to various community efforts.

In this regard, Her Excellency indicated that the development of the strategy was the result of cooperative work between federal and local authorities, and in consultation with the private sector and all sectors of society. She confirmed that more than 100 meetings were organized, and more than 800 opinions and observations were received as part of developing the strategy.
Her Excellency stressed that the UAE Strategy for Climate Neutrality 2050 is one of the most important national projects to achieve sustainable development in the UAE for the coming years, which requires more collective action across various federal and local authorities, the private sector, and across all targeted sectors.
This is to ensure the completion of many emission reduction and carbon removal initiatives, in addition to strengthening all sectors of society to ensure their effective participation in efforts aimed at achieving climate neutrality.
During the session, Her Excellency reviewed the UAE’s strategy for climate neutrality 2050, the efforts and achievements that have already been achieved, the future prospects for the next stage, and the country’s efforts to support climate action with a comprehensive set of strategies, plans and programs that contribute to reaching the goal of achieving climate neutrality in 2050.
The strategies and plans launched by the state represent a comprehensive, interconnected system of policies for all environmental fields that reflect the depth of future visions and proactive planning in confronting climate challenges, protecting the state’s natural resources, and enhancing their sustainability.
