“The first collection of observational data on the back side of the satellite… Refutes the ‘asteroid origin theory'”
(Tehran = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Seung-min = The first Arab Mars exploration vessel, ‘Amal’, sent by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), succeeded in capturing ‘Deimos’, one of the two satellites (moon) of Mars, in high-definition.
The UAE Space Agency issued a statement on the 24th (local time) and announced that ‘Amal’ (Arabic for hope) had sent photos taken up to a distance of about 110 km to Deimos.
The Space Agency explained that it was able to precisely capture the appearance of Deimos using imaging equipment that measures infrared and ultraviolet wavelengths.
In addition, as Amal succeeds in observing the back of Deimos, which has never been studied, it is expected to activate research on the origin of Mars satellites, the space agency added.
Deimos is 12 km wide and orbits about 23,000 km from Mars.
UAE Prime Minister and ruler of Dubai, Muhammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, tweeted that data collected by the probe could refute the theory that Deimos was an asteroid in the past.
“Deimos was once part of Mars and appears to have separated from Mars millions of years ago,” he added. “This is similar to the Moon orbiting our Earth.”
The Space Agency decided to extend the mission’s two-year duration by one year to allow Amal to pass Deimos and collect more data.
Launched in July 2020, Amal landed in Mars orbit in February 2021.
AFP reported that the photo sent by Amal is the sharpest image of Deimos ever captured.
The UAE is leading the space project most actively in the Arab world.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the fifth country to successfully launch a probe into Mars orbit, following the United States, the former Soviet Union, the European Space Agency, and India.
UAE became the first Arab country to select a female astronaut.
It also plans to send an astronaut on a long-term mission to space for the 11th time in the world. We are preparing to send an unmanned spacecraft to the moon in 2024.
The UAE is also promoting the ‘Mars 2117 Project’, which aims to build a city where people can live on Mars in 2117.
