UAE Center for Reducing Carbon Emissions in the Maritime Sector: A Pioneering Step towards Sustainability and Global Excellence

The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure announced cooperation in establishing the UAE Center for Reducing Carbon Emissions in the Maritime Sector, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa region, and the fourth in the world, in a pioneering step that enhances the UAE’s position as a global center of excellence in the field of sustainability and transformation in the energy sector.

This ground-breaking initiative, developed in collaboration with the Norwegian classification agency DNV, is a milestone for the UAE and the wider MENA region, and will set a new benchmark for marine carbon removal efforts around the world.

The center aims to advance research, innovation and cooperation efforts between stakeholders, with the aim of accelerating the adoption of sustainable practices, technologies and policies in the maritime sector, by taking advantage of the strategic geographical location of the UAE and its distinguished position in the maritime sector, in addition to the extensive experience that DNV possesses.

Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, said, “The UAE leads many indicators of international competitiveness in the maritime sector, and ranks third in the world in supplying ship fuel, fifth in the world among the best marine centers, and twelfth in the transport lines index, thanks to the competitive business environment provided by the state, which contributes to attracting major global maritime companies, and makes the country’s ports the preferred destination for international shipping lines.”

The minister added, “The establishment of the Emirates Center for Reducing Carbon Emissions in the Maritime Sector reflects our firm commitment to limiting climate change and promoting sustainable practices in the maritime sector. Through cooperation with DNV, we aim to benefit from their extensive experience and global network to drive innovation and accelerate the adoption of carbon removal technologies. The center will also play a pivotal role in promoting sustainability goals at the national and regional levels, in addition to supporting global efforts to combat climate change.”

The establishment of the Emirates Center for Reducing Carbon Emissions in the Maritime Sector highlights the country’s firm commitment to work towards achieving ambitious goals in the sustainability sector in line with the UAE’s Climate Neutral Strategy 2050; By leading efforts to remove marine carbon, the country aims to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, exceeding global ambitions, and strengthening its leading global position in combating climate change.

The center will be a pioneering platform for research, development and application of innovative technologies and strategies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the maritime sector. The center will also implement joint industrial projects, incubators and accelerator programs, as well as initiatives to support and refine future competencies and talents. The center will provide access to financing opportunities and enhance cooperation between stakeholders in the sector, as well as its role as a knowledge center by disseminating information, data and research results that it will conduct in its fields of work.

Knut Orbeck-Nielsen, CEO of DNV Maritime, confirmed that this partnership comes in line with the commitment to drive sustainable transformation in the maritime sector, as this center will provide an excellent platform to accelerate the development and deployment of carbon removal technologies, noting that by working with stakeholders in the sector, research institutions and academia, innovation can be promoted and the adoption of best practices that will make the maritime sector a more sustainable and efficient sector, thus enhancing the UAE’s attractiveness, global standing and competitiveness in the maritime sector.

This initiative is in line with the ongoing preparations to host the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP28) in the UAE, which will highlight its commitment to sustainability and transformation in the energy sector at the global level. During the conference, the Emirates Center for Reducing Carbon Emissions in the Maritime Sector will play an important role in enhancing the country’s global position as a center for sustainable innovation and global cooperation.

Eng. Hessa Al Malik, Advisor to the Minister for Maritime Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said that the ministry seeks to unify the maritime sector to build the UAE maritime cluster and turn it into a force that enhances business growth opportunities and contributes to enhancing the capabilities and capabilities of companies by bringing them together under one umbrella, noting that digital technologies represent the best way to build this cluster, unify information on the maritime sector and develop innovative mechanisms to explore business opportunities.

Expert: Economic challenges are an obstacle to reducing carbon emissions

Al Malik added that the center will represent an important platform for research, cooperation and knowledge transfer in the field of marine carbon removal, pointing to the focus on developing and implementing sustainable solutions through partnerships and strategic initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy efficiency in marine operations.

The partnership between the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and DNV includes a number of distinguished projects and initiatives launched by the ministry, including the UAE Maritime Cluster initiative and the Maritime Network, which aims to build a global network of professionals and experts to enhance the competitiveness of the UAE maritime sector and market it globally, and benefit from the presence of international maritime companies in the UAE.
