UAE Ambassador Affirms Growing Relations with Ethiopia in Trade, Renewable Energy, and Investment

ADDIS ABABA, 18th August, WAM / His Excellency Mohamed Salem Al Rashidi, UAE Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, affirmed that the historical relations between the UAE and Ethiopia have witnessed remarkable progress over the past few years, especially in light of the distinguished friendship between the leaderships of the two countries, and the exchange of visits and meetings between His Highness. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, “may God protect him,” and His Excellency Dr. Abi Ahmed, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and the expansion of cooperation in various fields and at various levels, which gave relations more progress to enhance their horizons to new levels.

His Excellency said in a statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, on the occasion of the visit of His Highness the President of the State, may God protect him, to Ethiopia: “The UAE is one of the most important trade partners of Ethiopia, and trade exchange has witnessed steady growth in the past few years, as the estimates of the Ethiopian Ministry of Commerce indicate He pointed out that the volume of trade exchange between the two countries amounted to 6 billion US dollars, pointing out that the number of Emirati investment projects in Ethiopia is estimated at more than 113 projects.
His Excellency added: “The UAE and Ethiopia are cooperating in the field of renewable energy, which is an area of ​​mutual interest from the two friendly countries, especially since the UAE is a major international supporter in the field of renewable energy, while the Ethiopian government seeks to implement its strategy to achieve development by developing the renewable energy sector to meet its needs.” of electric energy.. The Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company “Masdar” signed a joint development agreement with the Ethiopian government in January 2023 in Abu Dhabi, to develop two solar power plants that will have a combined generating capacity of 500 megawatts. Masdar also previously signed a similar agreement with the Ethiopian government in March 2021 in Addis Ababa to develop solar energy projects in multiple locations in Ethiopia, which would push Ethiopian efforts to diversify energy sources and achieve economic development.
His Excellency pointed out that Ethiopia is an important investment partner for the UAE in East Africa, given that it has a large and emerging consumer market of more than 100 million people, and enjoys diverse resources and economic potential in several sectors such as health, clean energy, technology, communications, and others. Ethiopia has become an attractive destination for foreign investment, as many Emirati companies have implemented 113 investment projects in Ethiopia, stressing that there is a growing interest on the part of Emirati companies to invest in Ethiopia, in sectors related to food security, agriculture, livestock and logistics.
His Excellency noted that the UAE is also a strategic partner for Ethiopia in its efforts to achieve development, as Emirati relief and humanitarian organizations contribute to development efforts in various social sectors through the implementation of many humanitarian and development activities and programs in Ethiopia. He said: “Development cooperation is one of the areas The main cooperation between the two countries, the most important of which is the health field, building health capacities and empowering women and youth through supporting and financing small and medium projects in Ethiopia, in addition to providing scholarships for Ethiopian students to study in UAE universities.
