Matīss Rožlapa, the head coach of the Latvian U20 women’s team, has named 18 players who have been invited to the training camp to start preparing for the European U20 Championship on June 6 (2002 and younger).
The tournament will take place from 8 to 16 July in Sopron, Hungary. In the first stage, the Latvian team will play with the national teams of Serbia, Portugal and Ireland in Group D. In the eighth final, you will have to play with one of the Group C teams (Spain, Lithuania, Poland, Bulgaria).
Latvian U20 national team head coach Matīss Rožlapa:
“The list of candidates includes almost all the best players of this age, except for Katrīna Trankali, who will not be able to join due to injury. They have been in the hands of Latvian teams during many seasons. I have also followed the “Americans”, whose readiness can only be assessed objectively only in the gym.
Ainars Zirectgdins and Rūdolfs Rozitis will help me to work with the team. It will be interesting for myself and, I am sure, also for the players, adding to the experience and understanding of basketball.
Seven valuable test games are planned in the preparatory phase. In Riga we will host the national teams of Lithuania and Finland, but in France we will meet the hosts of the test tournament, as well as the national teams of Germany and Sweden.
In the first game of our opponent’s European Championship, we played for the Serbian national team with a difference of 30 points in the U16 tournament four years ago, but a lot has definitely changed since then. Of course, we gather the latest information about the performance of the opponents in last year’s Challenger tournaments, but the most important thing is to prepare yourself as well as possible. ”
The European Youth Championships will resume after a two-year break. 2002/2003 Teams of players born in 2006 have so far only had experience in the European U16 Championship, but some of the basketball players included in the candidates have also participated in the European U18 Championship and the U17 World Cup. In 2018 and 2019, in the European Cadet Championships, the Latvian team under the leadership of head coach Matis Rožlapas won the 9th and 8th place, respectively.
