The German U20 national team lost the second World Cup group game against defending champions and hosts Canada. 24 hours after the brilliant performance against Finland (3: 5), the strongly decimated team of U20 national coach Tobias Abstreiter at Rogers Place in Edmonton lost 2:16 (1: 4, 0: 7, 1: 5). The goals for the selection of the German Ice Hockey Federation were scored by John Peterka (14th) during a five-minute outnumbered situation and Florian Elias (60th) also in power play a few seconds before the final siren.
As in the opening game, the DEB team had to make do with 14 field players, but they are hoping for a new squad for the next match. As in Finland, Arno Tiefensee started in the DEB team’s goal, from the second third Jonas Gähr was between the posts. The German U20s now have a day off before the important duel against Slovakia follows on the night of December 29th. From 3.30 a.m. (CET / live on MagentaSport), the DEB selection will be used for the third time at this World Cup tournament.
The goals for the Canadian team, almost without exception made up of high NHL draft picks, marked Kaiden Guhle (2nd), Dawson Mercer (8th, 23rd), Philip Tomasino (15th, 34th), Peyton Krebs (20th, 40th), Ryan Suzuki (26th), Alex Newhook (27th, 31st), Dylan Cozens (39th, 41st, 45th), Jakob Pelletier (46th), Thomas Harley (47th) and Connor McMichael (49.). In the early stages of the match, Tim Stützle (3rd) and Manuel Alberg (7th) had two good options for the DEB selection, which felt the tiredness more and more during the game.
Interim sports director Christian Künast: “You could clearly see that it was the second game within 24 hours and that most of the team had been without training for ten days. So the defeat can also be explained in height. The mistakes added up because our players got more and more tired. Nevertheless, the team continued to fight for each other and stick together. Now it is time to refocus, refill the tanks and then be ready against Slovakia. “
