In addition to top talent, there are also top coaches at the international U19 tournament in Oberndorf. Christian Streich was a permanent guest for many years and a Champions League winner has already made his appearance on the Neckar.

Christian Streich was the coach of the SC Freiburg U19 team for more than 15 years and was therefore a constant at the Oberndorf U19 tournament. After Finke’s successor Robin Dutt parted ways with the pros in Freiburg in 2011, he took over as assistant coach under Marcus Sorg. When the management of SC Freiburg decided to part ways with Sorg due to the precarious sporting situation after the first half of the season, StreichRifle stood by and rose to the executive chair at the beginning of 2012.
Voted Coach of the Year
The subsequent success story of the Breisgau-Brazilians is certainly still remembered by everyone. Streich led the team out of the relegation loop in the second half of the season and into the Europa League the following season. His performance was also recognized at the time in that he was named Coach of the Year after the season.
Streich also managed to stay on the road to success in the past season. SC Freiburg fans will be able to see not only Bundesliga but also Europa League football in Breisgau in the coming season. Streich has also managed to make national players with Matthias Ginter, Christian Günter and Oliver Sorg, three of the many talents from the SC football school.
But the faithful companions of Streich from the old U19 days are not to be despised either. Streich took his former assistant coach Lars Vossler, who temporarily took over the U19s as Streich’s successor, into the professional coaching staff and he is an elementary support at SC Freiburg. Another former assistant trainer of Streich, Clemens Hartenbach, is now even part of the Breisgau management team.
Thomas Tuchel with a storybook career
In 2005/2006, Thomas Tuchel worked as an assistant coach alongside Hansi Kleitsch (who now works in scouting at TSG Hoffenheim and had previously held the same position for Bayern Munich for several years) in Oberndorf. He moved to FSV Mainz 05, where he sensationally led the U19 team there to the German championship title in 2009.
In 2010 he took over the professional team from Mainz after Joern Anderson, who had been hired to succeed Jürgen Klopp (after he left for Dortmund), had to leave. Under Tuchel’s direction, Mainz continued the successes under Jürgen Klopp and established themselves in the middle of the table in the Bundesliga. In the years that followed, they repeatedly tried out the EuropaLeague and in the past season it worked again after the only qualification for this competition in 2005/2006. Surprisingly for many, Tuchel announced at the end of last season that he would be taking a year off and the contract with Mainz was terminated.
Today Thomas Tuchel is one of the most respected coaches. After his engagement at Paris St. Germain he moved to Chelsea. He won the Champions League with the London club in the 2020/21 season.
