After the respectable 1:1 draw at FC Bruges at the start of the UEFA Youth League, Borussia’s U19s are returning to everyday football. The leaders of the preliminary round group C of the DFB youth league will be guests at Fortuna Düsseldorf on Sunday (September 22nd, 1 p.m., Paul-Janes-Stadion). This duel is the top game of the weekend, as Fortuna won the catch-up game against FC Schalke 04 1:0 and are now 16 points behind BVB (18) in second place ahead of Schalke (12 points).
”,”title”:”Teaser Text”,”multiValue”:false,”value”:”After the respectable 1:1 draw at FC Bruges at the start of the UEFA Youth League, Borussia’s U19s are returning to everyday football. Mike Tullberg announces a rotation of personnel for the away game in Düsseldorf. In the weeks leading up to the winter break, the UEFA Youth League is a priority. “Because we are eleven points ahead of fourth place after six rounds in the youth league and the first three teams will advance, we should definitely qualify for the A league. This new league format, in which we play two or three games on equal terms, makes little sense for the training of our players. The UEFA Youth League is a completely different challenge for them.”

Tyler Meiser, Nick Cherny, Mussa Kaba, Samuele Inacio and co. have to take the next steps in their development in the European junior premier class. At FC Bruges they learned quickly after a weak first half. “I stayed calm during the break because I didn’t want to overwhelm the team, which only had two U19 players on the pitch after William Rashidi’s early exit – Kjell Wätjen and Cole Campbell,” reveals Tullberg, adding: “It was nice to see that we managed to give them energy, self-confidence and new courage. I have to be very patient, but it’s great fun working with the boys.“

Ultimately, the Borussia team rewarded themselves with the equalizer by Kjell Wätjen, who received special praise from Tullberg: “It’s great how he helps our U18 and U17 players off the pitch too. But Kjell alone cannot take on all the responsibility. He is also only 18 years old. The young professional himself was grateful to get match practice again after recent injury breaks. Personally, it is very beneficial for me to compete against the best teams in the Youth League. This is the highest level in the junior area and the intensity is far higher than in the junior league.

Tullberg: „We remain a young team“

His colleagues in Bruges felt that. “They now know what it means to play in the Youth League. But the respectable success should give them a boost,“ smiled Tullberg, who is looking ahead to the next games: “The team will continue to be very young. Perhaps Filippo Mane and Almugera Kabar will join them against Celtic. We have to somehow manage to get into the top 22 teams in the final table in order to have another international game in January or February. That is the goal.“

Achieving that will be difficult enough. The next three opponents celebrated successes on the first match day: Celtic beat Bratislava 4-0, Real Madrid beat VfB Stuttgart 1-0 and Sturm Graz beat Brest 4-1. But first they’re off to Düsseldorf and a week later (Friday, September 27th, 6:30 p.m.) they’re off to RW Essen for the first second half match in the DFB junior league. The next international celebration is on Tuesday, October 1st, at 4 p.m. in the youth stadium of the junior performance center against Celtic Glasgow.
