U19 loses to Werder Bremen in the DFB Cup for juniors

In a special match on Sunday afternoon, our A-Juniors had to admit defeat, as expected, to the youth team of the Bundesliga club SV Werder Bremen. The match in the first round of the DFB Cup for juniors ended with a 1:8 (1:4) home defeat for our U19s.

Coach Jerôme Arps’ team qualified for the national competition for the second year in a row with a 5:2 final victory against Heider SV and the associated title defense in the SHFV Cup. Like last year, when they had to cope with a 2:7 defeat against FC Schalke 04, the match was again played in the stadium.

SV Werder Bremen, who have yet to lose a competitive match this season, won several corners in the early stages, but our U19s defended them safely. In attack, Yousef Anwar Ahmad broke through well down the flank, but his cross was intercepted by goalkeeper Stefan Smarkalev (5th minute). A shot from Linus Goldmann also landed over the goal (15th minute). The guests became dangerous for the first time through Arda Halicioglu (6th, 19th minute), and Patrice Covic and Princewill Mbock also scored from promising positions. VfB goalkeeper Timon Stührwohldt was able to distinguish himself in several scenes with good reflexes. After Marvin Grabowski’s shot from close range was parried by Smarkalev (22nd minute), the guests took the lead through Covic (24th minute). On the other hand, Goldmann did not hit the ball properly after preparatory work by Athanasios Chrysovitsiotis, allowing Smarkalev to pick it up (32′). Shortly before the break, things got eventful again. First, Covic extended the visitors’ lead with his second goal after he converted a low cross into the penalty area (36′). After a precise cross from Anès Hadj, Goldmann scored the equaliser to the delight of 314 spectators in the stadium (40′). SV Werder Bremen, however, had the immediate answer and restored the old lead before half-time with a goal from Mbock (41′) and an unfortunate own goal from Grabowski (43′), meaning our U19s went into the break 1:4 behind.

In the second half, our A-Juniors had the first opportunity, but Chrysovitsiotis’ shot landed wide of the goal (48th minute). After VfB goalkeeper Stührwohldt initially prevented a larger deficit with further saves, he was powerless against substitute Salim Musah, who scored a brace within a matter of minutes (64th minute, 77th minute). The result became even clearer in the final minutes, as Jannes Warnken scored from close range (88th minute) and Julius Joas (90th minute) shortly afterwards. In the end, our U19s suffered a 1:8 defeat, but the team gained valuable experience from it for their future development. Coach Jerôme Arps also assessed the events after the match accordingly: “Ultimately, the game was clear and we deserved to lose 1:8. The first half was totally fine, we were able to create some good chances and our defense was very disciplined. Even after the 0:1 and 0:2, we still managed to pull ourselves together and even made it 1:2. From then on, Bremen turned up the heat. We kept having problems defending in front of the box. In the second half, we had planned to score another goal so that the stadium would be loud again. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage that. Bremen simply did much better. We are happy that so many spectators were there and supported us. That was great! We enjoyed the day despite the defeat.”

Our U19s’ next game is also a knockout duel. In the SHFV Cup round of 16, we will play against JFV Lübeck on Wednesday, September 11, 2024 at 6:30 p.m.
