U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen met with Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng on the 3rd ahead of her visit to China on the 6th to 9th.
“Candid and productive discussions underpin our continued efforts to maintain open lines of communication and responsibly manage bilateral relations between the United States and China,” the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement.
Treasury said Secretary Yellen’s conversation with Ambassador Xie raised concerns about the importance of cooperation between the two economic powers on the world’s challenges, including macroeconomic and financial issues.
Chinese state media reported that Ambassador Xie conveyed hope that the two countries would eliminate interference in internal affairs and strengthen dialogue.
Minister Yellen will visit China from the 6th to the 9th to meet with senior officials.
Earlier, a senior Treasury official told reporters that the United States wants healthy economic relations with China, and that halting trade and investment would destabilize both the two countries and the global economy.
The senior official also said Yellen plans to discuss US concerns about China’s new espionage law during her visit to China.
