U.S. Treasury Imposes Sanctions on Serbian Ex-Official Linked to Corruption and Russian Influence

The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control imposed sanctions on a Serbian ex-official, which the agency said underscores the United States’ determination to prosecute those involved in self-interested corruption and damaging peace and stability in the Western Balkans. . “Ministry of Finance will not hesitate to target subjects who abuse their position for personal gainwhile undermining effective and democratic governance in the Western Balkans,” Nelson said.

The official statement said that the director of the Serbian Security Information Agency, ex-Minister of Defense and ex-Minister of Internal Affairs Aleksandar Vulin was involved in transnational organized crime, drug trafficking and abuse of power.

According to the Ministry of Finance, the official used his powers to support Russia, providing it with a platform to increase its influence in the region.

As a result of the imposed sanctions, all property (or related transactions) and interests of Vulin in the United States or in the possession or control of US persons are blocked.

Recall that earlier the Minister of Economy of Serbia, Rade Bashta, was dismissed after his calls to the government of the country to impose sanctions against Russia.
