(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kang Byeong-cheol = The U.S. Central Command announced on the 16th (local time) that it had shot down 14 drones launched by Yemen’s pro-Iran rebels Houthis in the Red Sea.

Central Command said, “The destroyer Kani operating in the Red Sea successfully engaged 14 aerial drones launched from Houthi-controlled Yemen,” Reuters reported.

“This is an attack drone and was shot down without causing any damage to vessels in the area,” Central Command said. “Partners in the Red Sea region have also been warned of this threat.”

Separately, the British destroyer HMS Diamond also shot down a drone targeting a merchant ship, the Associated Press reported. The media reported that this was the first time the Royal Navy shot down an aerial target since the 1991 Gulf War.

“Attacks on commercial shipping by Yemen’s Houthi rebels pose a direct threat to international trade and maritime security,” said British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps.

Houthi rebels are continuing to attack civilian ships in the Red Sea, a major sea route connecting Europe and Asia.

Recently, two cargo ships caught by Houthi rebels’ missiles caught fire.

The United States will soon expand the multinational fleet operating in the Red Sea to protect civilian shipping.

“We will continue to do what we can with our diverse partners to make free trade more secure in this vital gateway and international waterway,” said John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator for the National Security Council (NSC), at a briefing the day before. “I think we will be able to reveal specific details regarding the mobile unit within a few days,” he said.
