Tragedy Strikes: U.S. Navy SEALs Missing at Sea off Somalia Coast, Search Called Off
In a devastating turn of events, a search for two U.S. Navy SEALs who went missing at sea off the coast of Somalia has been called off, according to U.S. Central Command. The SEALs were on a mission to intercept shipments of Iranian-made weapons destined for Houthi rebels in Yemen. This operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb the rebels’ attacks that pose a threat to global trade in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The incident occurred when the two special forces operators were attempting to board a suspicious vessel that was suspected of smuggling weapons. As they climbed a ladder to board the ship, they were hit by high waves, causing one SEAL to fall into the sea. Following Navy SEAL protocol, the second SEAL immediately jumped in to assist his partner in distress. Tragically, both SEALs vanished in the rough waters.
After an exhaustive 10-day search covering more than 21,000 square miles, U.S. CENTCOM announced that the missing SEALs had not been located and their status has been changed to deceased. Recovery operations are now underway to bring closure to this heartbreaking incident.
The search efforts involved the collaboration of airborne and naval platforms from the U.S., Japan, and Spain. Additionally, several organizations provided support, including the Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center, the U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area Command, University of San Diego – Scripts Institute of Oceanography, and the Office of Naval Research – Oceanographic support. Despite their combined efforts, the missing SEALs could not be found.
Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla expressed his condolences, stating, “We mourn the loss of our two Naval Special Warfare warriors, and we will forever honor their sacrifice and example.” He extended his prayers to the SEALs’ families, friends, the U.S. Navy, and the entire Special Operations community during this difficult time. Out of respect for the families, the names of the SEALs have not been released as family notifications continue.
The raid conducted by the SEALs on January 11 was part of a series of successful operations aimed at intercepting weapon shipments bound for the Houthi rebels. These rebels have been responsible for launching attacks that threaten global trade in the region due to Israel’s conflict with the Hamas terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip. The seized missile components are believed to be the same types used in these attacks.
In response to the threat posed by the weapons, the Navy made the decision to sink the ship carrying them, deeming it unsafe. The 14 crew members of the vessel were detained as part of the operation.
