“A collision in the Taiwan Strait would have devastating and unimaginable impacts on the world economy,” U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said in a speech.
At the same time, he stressed that the world’s interests are at stake in maintaining stability and peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Secretary Austin therefore confirmed that “freedom of navigation” operations in the region would continue, and ordered talks with China to avoid conflict.
China reacted immediately to this.
“The Taiwan issue is related to China’s core interests, and there is no compromise or concession of any kind,” said Jing Jianfeng, deputy chief of staff of the Central Military Commission’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.
