A U.S. government official has expressed its position that it will promote a Korea-US-Japan summit during the G7 period.

This is what White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan commented on Air Force One flight to Japan to attend President Biden’s G7 summit.

In response to a reporter’s question about the Korea-US-Japan summit, Adviser Sullivan said, “This is basically a matter of schedule.”

“All three countries are basically in good faith about this, especially in the sense that real progress has been made in Korea-Japan relations with the support of the United States, and strengthening Korea-Japan relations leads to a strong trilateral relationship,” he explained.

“That’s why, if we can find time in the tight schedule, the United States will push forward with the trilateral talks,” he said.

However, because of the busy schedule, we cannot give any definite answer.”

Regarding the G7 summit, he said, “The announcement will include the topic of China’s economic coercion,” and “I expect Ukrainian President Zelensky to participate during the meeting.”

There was also a question about the possibility that President Biden would visit the Hiroshima Peace Park Cenotaph for atomic bomb victims and apologize for the US atomic bombing during World War II.

Regarding this, Assistant Sullivan emphasized that President Biden will not make any statements when visiting Peace Park.”

In the aftermath of President Biden’s cancellation of visits to Papua New Guinea and Australia scheduled after the G7, he refuted the point that it could lead to weakening relations in the Indo-Pacific amid the rise of China, saying that it did not reflect reality.

He also mentioned that President Yoon Seok-yeol’s state visit to the United States last month led to the historic Washington Declaration, and that the United Kingdom and Australia announced the first nuclear submarine-related defense partnership in 60 years.

It is interpreted as emphasizing that there is no abnormality in the Indo-Pacific security situation as a close cooperation system has been established with allies such as the UK and Australia as well as Korea.
