U.C. Davis Conducts Clinical Trial for CAR-T Cell Therapy against HIV

Researchers from theU.C. Davis enrolled a second participant in their clinical trial to develop a CAR-T cell therapy against HIV. This type of therapy involves taking the patient’s white blood cells, T cells, and modifying them so that they can identify and target HIV. Currently, approximately 38 million people are living with HIV worldwide.

The first patient joined the trial duoCAR last August. This is the first human clinical trial for this type of treatment. ” So far, no treatment-related adverse events have been observed and both participants are doing well. “, indicates Mehrdad Abedi, who supervises this test.

« Our primary goal for this phase of the trial is to assess the safety and tolerability of different single-dose regimens of CAR T therapy. “says the doctor. Three cohorts of three people each will be recruited. The trial is open: both the researchers and the participants know which treatment is being administered.

CAR-T therapies are already approved by the FDA to treat certain types of lymphoma and leukemia, as well as multiple myeloma (cf. A new type of CAR-T cell to treat childhood cancers? ). They are also considered to combat systemic lupus erythematosus which does not respond to current lupus treatments (see CAR-T cells: from cancer treatment to lupus?).
